Bertie Newman – between the pines
The morning light will seep between the pines. If you're not here then where am I?
Bertie Newman's between the pines is a hushed, cinematic folk song about missing someone in the quietest places. Written by Bertie Newman and Mark Zito, released on V2 Records and added to Cozy Indie & Folk 2026.
"The morning light will seep between the pines. If you're not here then where am I?" Bertie Newman opens "between the pines" with a single quiet image and a question, and the rest of the song never quite answers it.
The verses stay close to nature and to the empty space someone has left behind: solemn birds, stars that "caress the clouds", a raging fire with people gathering round, and still the same line coming back: "without you". He compares the person he misses to a mountain side that never moves, before the song opens up at the end: "I keep hoping that some day you'll come my way. I'm just holding out for you to fill the space."
The song was written by Bertie Newman and Mark Zito and released on 15 October 2026 under exclusive licence to V2 Records. An official lyric video followed a day later. We added it to Cozy Indie & Folk 2026 on 16 October.
That is why it is Song of the Day. A hushed, patient folk song that sounds like a long walk through the woods with someone missing at your side.
